A self-contained ski hill and alpine village just a 90-minute drive from Toronto, Blue Mountain is Canada’s third-busiest ski resort. This family-friendly resort and weekend favourite offers 42 different trails over 365 acres of skiable terrain and 720 feet of vertical. Plus, plenty of beginner slopes and one of the best ski schools in the country if you’re wanting to use your season (and free staff lift pass) to learn to ski or ride. But it’s not all about winter here – a year-round resort, there’s also excellent hiking, mountain biking, golfing, canoeing, caving and more. And plenty of summer and winter jobs through yours truly to go with it.

With over 40 trails (30 of which are night runs, so great for skiing after your shift), Blue Mountain is the East Coast’s favourite ski resort. Ontario’s largest skiable area – the freshly groomed and accessible slopes cater to all levels of skiers and boarders. There are also three terrain parks – complete with boxes, rails, a half-pipe and a pretty epic line jump. As a self-contained resort, it’s a close-knit choice to work your season – where you’ll get to know all the faces. Plus, a few restaurants, bars and influx of visiting Torontonians (say that with a face full of chocolate-covered BeaverTail) give it a decent après vibe.

An all-year-round resort, Blue Mountain offers plenty of things to do every month of the year. The surrounding hills are excellent for hiking and mountain biking – and offer incredible panoramic views of the UNESCO-listed Niagara Escarpment. Plus, a vast golf course if you’re wanting to practice your swing. For something a bit different, head up the open-air gondola to the top of the mountain with a picnic, or head deep into the aptly-named Refrigerator Cave for a subterranean adventure. There’s also a bike park with 23 different trails, plus a mountain coaster, ziplining and axe throwing for thrill-seekers/wannabe woodcutters.

"If you’re looking to work outdoors on the East Coast during your working holiday visa, then Blue Mountain is the place to do it. You can work year-round (ish) – minus some off season months where you could travel or head back to the city. With subsidised staff housing and a lift pass included, it’s a great choice vs some of the pricier resorts in B.C. if you’re on more of a budget. Plus, if you haven’t seen a pair of ski before, it’s a good place to learn. It’s quieter in the week, giving you more runs to ride, with livelier nightlife at weekends."
