Visa + cost

Who can apply for a Canada working holiday visa?

To work in Canada, you must be eligible for a Canada working holiday visa (known as an IEC visa). More confusing than the first time you get maple syrup on your fry-up, Canada IEC visas operate via a pool system – where you enter your profile and names are drawn at regular intervals until either the pools shut or your country's allocation runs out. It changes each year, but the IEC visa pools typically open in Dec/Jan and close in Oct/Nov. Entering the pool as soon as it opens ensures your name is exposed to the maximum number of draws – increasing your chance of getting an 'Invitation to apply' (ITA) for your visa.

Don’t see your flag below? Check out our visa FAQs for more eligible nationalities or call us.

Am I eligible?

  • Must be aged 18-30 (35 for some countries)
  • Must hold a passport from one of these countries: Chile, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea or Taiwan
  • You must have health insurance for the duration of your intended stay
  • You must have a ticket to leave Canada or have enough money to buy one
  • You must have support funds of $2,500 CAD

Winter jobs in Canada

Work from November to March

Whether you’re a professional powderhound or fresh-to-the-slopes newbie, a ski season is the ultimate way to get paid to do what you love. Video interviews for 4-6 month winter jobs with Nov/Dec start dates usually open in May/Jun. Particularly in iconic resorts like Whistler and Banff, jobs go faster than the Super-G, so book as soon as the visa pools open to be the first in line when resorts start hiring. Also, be open-minded about where you work. Alt resorts will often have better staff perks, less competition for jobs and housing, and less crowded slopes – so more riding rights when you’re off the clock.

Summer jobs in Canada

Work from April to October

Known as the Great White North, it’s hard not to think of Canada as a wintry destination. But Canada in summer is outrageously beautiful – with flower-filled prairies, turquoise lakes and an abundance of Nat Geo wildlife. Once the snow melts, most ski resorts transform into adventure playgrounds for hikers, bikers and rafters – pretty much offering year-round hospitality and outdoor jobs for working holidaymakers. And can be a great (snow) shoo-in for winter positions once the season ends. Video interviews for 4-6 month summer jobs with Apr/May start dates usually open in Jan/Feb – with some early hiring starting from Dec.

Year-round jobs

Nail your new life in Canada with a pre-arranged construction job. Whether you’re qualified in your trade, finishing up your vocational training or apprenticeship, or you’re just searching for unskilled physical work during your working holiday visa – we can hook you up with a job in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary or Kelowna. Jobs include working as a general labourer, skilled labourer, carpenter's helper, carpenter or labour foreman – and include great perks such as accommodation assistance, health and dental plans. You can apply year-round, and contracts can be anywhere from six months to two years.

Snow business

Why work a season in Canada?

No downhill skills required! Your Canada visa allows you to do pretty much any job in Canada. However, doing a ski or summer season resort job when you arrive is a great way to find your feet, meet other travellers, and live on the mountain. Plus, many seasonal jobs include subsidised staff accommodation - which is a total win when you've just moved over. With lift passes and lessons often included, it's a great time to learn to ski or board, but many non-skiers work seasons. After all, snow angels can be just as impressive as switch backside 180s. And après is universal, right?

The Canada Crew

Your Canada ride or die – all our JENZA Support Squad have worked the world, so are here for first-hand advice on where to go and what you can do. Other mad traveller skills include: parent whispering, visa geekery, and the ability to pack a backpack in 30 seconds flat.

How it works

Applying for your visa and getting hired

For both 3-day Own Job and 6-day JENZA Job, in-person arrival orientations are every Wednesday in Vancouver and Toronto. If you’re flying into Banff, Montreal or Calgary – virtual orientations are every Thursday. Heading straight to your resort? You can use your hostel nights at any point during your visa.

Check out our Countdown to Canada for the next steps to book on, enter the visa pool, and get hired.

Your countdown to Canada

Check your eligibility in the visa + cost section, hit book Book now and create your profile to start your application. You can then access your online account anytime from the top of this page. Once you’ve paid your deposit, use the step-by-step instructions in your online account to enter the visa pools. This involves an eligibility questionnaire that will give you a unique reference number that you’ll used to enter your profile into the pool.

2 days

An ITA is an ‘Invitation to Apply’ for your working holiday visa. ITAs are drawn at regular intervals until all the visa allocation has gone or the pools close. Therefore, putting a timescale on this step is hard. Having done this for decades, our best advice is to book Work Canada and enter the visa pools as soon as they open (usually Dec/Jan). That way, your name is exposed to the maximum number of draws – increasing your chances of receiving an ITA to apply for a visa.

10-60 days

Once you‘ve received your ITA, you have 10 days to accept it otherwise the place goes back into the pool. Once accepted, you have 20 days to pay your visa fee, submit your visa application, and provide supporting documents – such as your family form, police certificate and passport copy. We provide step-by-step guidance, are on the phones for 1-on-1 support, and run fortnightly Canada clinics to help ensure everything is done correctly.

1-30 days

Once your visa application is submitted, you have 30 days to book and attend an in-person biometrics appointment where you’ll have your fingerprints and photo taken. This is a visa requirement and has to be done at a registered visa centre. You’ll find all the information on where these are located in your online account.

30 days

Once you’ve paid your balance, if you booked ‘JENZA Job’, you’ll get access to our Job Hub where you can search and apply for positions by uploading your resume, cover letter and references. Summer hiring usually opens in Jan/Feb and winter hiring in May/Jun. Particularly for ski jobs, the earlier you get to this stage – the better chance you have of securing a job in coveted resorts like Whistler and Banff.

30+ days

It’s now safe to book your flights and travel insurance. We’ll then book your hostel nights, send over your digital handbook stacked with Canada intel, and links to join our Discord groups to connect with other travellers also heading out to Canada that season. Every Tuesday, SWAP (our in-country sidekicks) run a virtual pre-departure orientation where you can ask all your questions and get all the info on moving to Canada.

2-7 days

If arriving into Vancouver or Toronto, you’ll have your in-person orientation at SWAP’s offices. This includes bank account, SIN and phone SIM set-up, a job workshop, resume review, help with housing, transport, 2 years’ job database access and more. Plus, access to monthly socials and help from the team for your whole visa. If arriving into Banff, Calgary or Montreal – you'll do your orientation remotely.

Talk to us

The Crew

Call us for all the intel on who can go, what jobs you can do, and how to figure out that pesky visa pool.

You can book onto Work Canada year-round. However, Canada working holiday visas operate via a visa pool system, so you can’t apply for your visa until the pools open. They usually open in Dec/Jan, and close Oct/Nov - or earlier if your country's allocation runs out. However, the IEC (International Experience Canada) make this decision, so exact dates can change from year to year. Due to the competition for Canada visas and Canada jobs, we recommend booking Work Canada as soon as they open. You can check the current quota of visas left for your country here.

You can find the list of nationalities eligible for the IEC working holiday visa here. Depending on your nationality, you must be 18-30 or 35, and will be granted a 12-24 month visa. To find out more about how the visa and pool system works, check out our nerdy Canada visa guide

Many nationalities (including Australian, New Zealand, British, Irish and European passport holders) can apply for an RO Letter (Recognised Organisation) or Young Professionals visa. These visas allow you to go back to Canada for a second time if you’ve already used your IEC working holiday visa. Check for eligibility and how to apply on our Canada Returner page. UK passport holders who had an IEC after 2015 can now enter the pools for a second 12-month visa without needing to use an RO Letter. Check out this Canada blog for the new rules for British passport holders. Confused? Call us and we’ll talk you through it!

Yes! The ski and summer resorts we work with can recruit for up to a hundred positions through us, so you’ll likely be working alongside 18-30s from all over the world. If you’re travelling solo, we suggest applying for jobs that include staff accommodation so that you have a ready-made friendship group to go.

Your in-person arrival orientation in Toronto and Vancouver is another great way to meet others. Likewise, we have Discord groups set up for different regions in Canada so that you can connect with travellers heading out to the same cities or resorts as you.

Depending on the option you choose, we include either 2 nights or 5 nights of hostel accommodation. This is in either a 4 or 6-person dorm in either the Samesun hostel in Toronto or Banff, HI Downtown for Vancouver, or the HI hostel in Calgary. If you’re flying straight to your resort to start your summer or ski job, you can do your orientation remotely and use your hostel nights at any other time in any of the above locations. (subject to availability). For example, for a weekend trip to Vancouver or a ski trip to Banff.

Many of our ski and summer employers also include subsidised staff housing, which is filled on a first come first served basis. We advise booking Work Canada early to ensure you get your preferred choice of job and accommodation.

SWAP also include access to their accommodation listings for the whole of your visa.

  • If you book ‘JENZA Job’ you have the option to arrange a 4-6 month summer or ski season job or year-round construction job before you go. Once you've paid in full, you’ll get access to the JENZA Job Hub where you can search, apply and video interview for jobs. For winter positions: we also have virtual hiring days each year where our ski employers will bulk recruit for their staff over 1-2 days. We also try to have an in-person hiring event each year where you can meet and interview with our winter employers face-to-face.
  • If you book ‘Own Job’ you’ll have a shorter number of hostel nights (2 nights instead of 5), but still have access to the same job workshops and arrival orientation when you land. You’ll also get access to SWAP’s job database for two years.

You can do almost any type of work on an IEC visa. A lot of travellers opt to do casual work, e.g. working in retail, restaurants, hotels or resorts. However, it’s also possible to independently find a more career-related job, e.g. if you are a qualified teacher, tradesperson or professional.

Typical jobs with our ski and summer resort employers include working as a server, housekeeper, cook, chef, front of house, retail assistant, barista, rental technician, lift attendant, ski instructor, snowmaker and more. Unless you’re working as a chef, instructor or front of house, you typically don’t need previous hospitality experience – although this can help you to get hired.

If you opt to pre-arrange a construction job, these roles include skilled and unskilled labourers, carpenters and carpenter’s helpers, and labour foremans. Many of these are skilled roles, and so are suited towards both qualified tradies and those who have completed their vocational training. For the unskilled roles, it’s a great opportunity to do a physical job and work as part of a team.

We have long-standing relationships with 20+ of Canada’s leading ski resorts - including Four Seasons Whistler, Pan Pacific Whistler, Westin Whistler, Whistler Blackcomb, Fairmont (Whistler, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper), Panorama Mountain Resort, Big White, Banff Sunshine Village, Cypress Mountain, Asessippi, Grouse Mountain, Blue Mountain and Vista Ridge to name a few.

We have hundreds of jobs available on our Job Hub each season, so we’ll definitely be able to secure you interviews. However, whether you get hired is ultimately down to the employer and your interview on the day.

We always recommend being open-minded about the resorts you apply to, e.g., jobs in popular resorts like Whistler and Banff will be more competitive. Also, if you are only looking to work in specific resorts and roles you MUST apply early. Winter hiring opens in May/Jun but as early as Dec/Jan, you can put down you preference for employers – getting you in-front of those employers as soon as hiring opens.

The Canada IEC visa is flexible and allows you to work anywhere in Canada for up to 24 months (depending on your nationality). It’s also multi-entry, so many travellers choose to head over for consecutive winters to work the ski season. Equally, there are no restrictions on how long you can work for any one company, so you can stay in the same job for the full duration of your visa.

A police background check will be required for every country you have continuously lived in for 6+ months since you were 18 - the cost and process varies per country. You can find out more in your online account.

You may be asked for your policy documents at immigration, so you must take out comprehensive travel insurance to cover you for your whole stay. For example, if you book a six-month policy to save money, you run the risk of your visa being stamped for that duration – not the full duration of your visa. If this happens, there is no way to extend your stay. Also, ensure that you are covered for all the wintersports and activities you plan to do while you're away.

Nothing! We’ve always been the same team running identical programs, just with different brand names in different countries. As you can imagine, this got crazy confusing. So in 2024, JENZA became the new name for all our working holiday and intern programs, and BUNAC went back to its 1972 Americana roots, and became our summer camp brand.
