Use AI to make your interview prep easier and more effective

AI can be a helpful tool in your internship job search, automating tasks and boosting your efforts.

Here are some tips to start using generative AI to complement your internship search efforts, but there are plenty more ways to make the most of AI in your search.

What platform to use?

The golden rule

When utilising AI in your internship search the one golden rule to remember is only you can tell your unique story. Whilst AI technology can help you re-write your CV/resume or craft emails to prospective employers, it doesn’t have your voice and context of your lived experiences, your personality and goals. Always review and tweak AI-generated content to ensure it authentically reflects who you are before sending it.

How AI can help you

Finding out what career path or jobs could suit you best

AI can be a great way to uncover a specific career path, industry or job you might not have thought of yet. Share your preferences with ChatGPT and ask it to suggest some suited career paths or jobs that match your interests and strengths.

Example prompts

• My hobbies and interests are: x, y and z

• At university the classes or lectures that I enjoy the most are x, y and z

• My personal character strengths are x, y and z (Top tip – find out your character strengths by taking one of these tests first!)

• Please suggest the best-suited career paths and job types based on my hobbies, preferred university classes and character strengths.

CV and resume edits - general

• Upload your CV first for Chat GPT to suggest enhancements and changes

• Please check the CV for grammar or spelling errors using UK/US English (Top tip: it's important to tailor spelling based on where your target employers are based).

Use ChatGPT to refine your LinkedIn profile. Paste in your work and educational sections of your LinkedIn profile.

• Please create a LinkedIn headline and summary using my work and education experience listed on my profile

• Please provide a list of [INDUSTRY] companies who have listed internship roles on LinkedIn previously (Top tip: target companies that have hired interns before to speed up your search).

Cover letter support

Reminder: Provide ChatGPT with context first. Upload your CV, link to your LinkedIn profile, job description and information about the company you are applying to.

Example prompts

• Provide a professional cover letter for a job application at [COMPANY NAME] for the position of {POSITION TITLE] and use my CV as a reference point for education and experience.

• If the cover letter is too long to start with you can ask Chat GPT to refine it using a lower word count.

• If there is a specific work experience or university class that you would like to focus more on you can prompt ChatGPT to refine the letter, so it focuses more on [WORK EXPERIENCE OR STUDIES].

Interview prep support

Chat GPT can be a strong tool when you are prepping for interviews by generating potential questions you may be asked during an interview and guiding your responses based on your experience.

Remember to provide ChatGPT with specific job descriptions or company websites before adding your prompts.

• Please provide sample interview questions based on the job description [JOB DESCRIPTION].

Upload your CV - now please answer those interview questions, linking the answers to my previous experience listed in my CV.

• Based on the job description, what questions should I ask the employer during an interview.
