At the start of your internship journey, It's time to set specific internship goals that align with your long-term aspirations.

Setting clear goals for your internship will help you make the most of the experience and ensure that it contributes to your career development

1. Set short-term and long-term professional goals

Think about where you want to be in the next five years and what steps you need to take to get there. Your short-term goals might include securing an internship in a specific industry or company or gaining experience in particular skills. Your long-term goal could involve advancing to a particular role or working for a specific company.

Example: If you are interested in finance, a short-term goal could be to secure an internship in financial analysis or corporate finance to gain hands-on experience. In the long term, your goal might be to advance to a role as a financial analyst, work for a top investment firm, or pursue a professional certification.

Action: Write down your long-term career goal and break it into actionable short-term goals. Consider how an internship can help you achieve these goals. Remember these are not set in stone—you can adjust them as you gain new insights and inspiration.

2. Identify inspiring companies

Think about the companies that inspire you, whether they are global giants, innovative startups or leaders in specific fields. Consider what aspects of their work and brand appeal to you. Is it their commitment to innovation, work culture or global impact. Keep an open mind—while big names like Google might be appealing, smaller companies or other industry leaders can offer invaluable hands-on experience, personalised mentorship opportunities and other ways to enhance your skills and boost your resume.

Example: You might aspire to work for Goldman Sachs because of its reputation for excellence, a vast network of industry professionals and the opportunity to work on high-profile deals. However, also consider smaller financial companies or fintech startups that have excellent reputations and can offer similar practical experience.

Action: List 5-10 inspiring companies, including a mix of large and small organisations, domestic and international. Note why they appeal to you and what internship opportunities they offer.

3. Evaluate current internship opportunities, including international internships

As you start exploring internship opportunities, consider roles that align with your evolving interests and career goals. Look beyond job descriptions to assess the potential for growth, skill development and meaningful experiences. Whether you’re exploring local or international internships, focus on experiences that will support your long-term career aspirations. International internships can be particularly valuable, offering unique cultural insights, global networking and exposure to international markets, which can significantly enhance your career prospects.

Example: If you’re interested in a finance internship, look for opportunities that provide exposure to various areas within the field, such as corporate finance, investment banking, financial analysis or accounting. An international internship in London or New York can offer you a broader understanding of global finance and exposure to diverse business practices.

Action: List 10 or more internship opportunities that interest you and align with your career aspirations. Pay attention to those offering growth, skill development and exposure to areas of interest.

Setting clear internship goals is important for ensuring that your internship experience contributes to your career development. You may have several internships during your college / uni career and post-graduation, with each one serving to advance different goals and build a strong foundation for your future. Remember, this is not a life-long commitment, but a short period of your professional life where you can learn and gain insights that inform your next professional chapter.
