Now that you’ve secured the interview, it’s time to refresh and deepen that research to make sure you’re fully up to date and ready to impress. Here’s how to make the most of your pre-interview prep.

Update your knowledge on recent company developments

Since your initial research things might have changed within the company or the industry. Take some time to check for any new announcements, product launches or leadership changes that may have occurred since you last looked them up.

Recent news Search for recent articles, press releases or blog posts that might highlight important changes. This will allow you to mention current events or shifts in strategy during your interview, showing that you’re informed and proactive.

Product or service offered Know what products or services the company provides and check if there are any recent updates or changes.

Revisit the company’s market position and competitors

Knowing the company’s competitors and where they stand in the market is crucial, especially if there have been recent shifts. This will allow you to speak intelligently about the company’s industry context and demonstrate your understanding of the business landscape.

Competitor check See if any major competitors have made significant moves recently such as new product launches, mergers or expansions. You can then subtly reference these changes during your interview.

Industry trends Look for any trends or challenges that might be affecting the company’s sector such as shifts in technology, market disruptions or emerging opportunities.

Financials Look at recent financial reports if they are available and any significant financial news to understand the company’s financial health and any significant news related to that.

Research company culture and work environment

During the interview, you’ll likely be asked why you want to work for this company specifically. Refining what you learned about their culture will help you personalise your answers and show that you’re a great fit for their team.

Mission and values Understand the company’s mission statement, core values and overall purpose.

Employee reviews Check if there are any recent employee reviews on platforms like Glassdoor or Indeed. Employee perspectives can give you a better sense of the current work environment and any recent changes in management or culture.

Diversity and inclusion initiatives Review any ongoing or new diversity and inclusion efforts the company may have launched since your initial research. This can provide a great talking point, especially if you’re passionate about such issues.

Tailor your knowledge to the role

Now that you have an interview for a specific position, refine your understanding of how the company’s current needs align with the job description.

Key responsibilities Review the job description again and identify where your skills match their needs. Think about how the company’s recent developments tie into the responsibilities of the role and be prepared to explain how you can contribute.

Your fit Be ready to discuss specific examples from your experience that align with their current projects or challenges. Showing that you’ve tailored your skills and background to their current priorities will make a strong impression.

Example If you’re interviewing for a marketing internship and the company has recently launched a new campaign, highlight how your previous coursework or project experience in digital marketing can help enhance their initiatives.

Refreshing your company research before the interview shows your continued interest and dedication, helping you stand out as a prepared and engaged candidate.
