- Must be aged 18-30 (35 for some nationalities)
- Must hold a passport from one of these countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden or Turkey
- Must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or have enough money to buy one
- Must have $4,200 NZD in support funds


For UK passport holders:

- You must be 18-30 (inclusive), meaning you must submit your application before your 31st birthday
- As of July ’23, UK passport holders can now work in New Zealand for three years
- You can either apply for the initial 12-month working holiday visa and extend it in-country, or apply for a three-year visa – in which case a medical certificate and other supporting info is required
- Once your first visa is approved, you have 12 months to enter New Zealand
- You must be able to prove you have NZD $4,200 in support funds when you enter New Zealand 


- You must be aged 18-30 
- You must hold a US passport
- You must have a ticket to leave New Zealand or have enough money to buy one
- You must have $4,200 NZD in support funds

A New Zealand working holiday visa allows 18-30 or 35 year olds to work in New Zealand for 12 months – or up to two or three years for some nationalities.

The slightly-more-serious-younger sibling, the 4-day one is all about providing you with the resources you need to start your working holiday. When you land in Auckland, you’ll have the security of a shared airport transfer and three nights’ dorm accommodation at the fresh AF LyLo hostel. Led by our JENZA team – a job workshop, travel planning and accommodation session, and assistance sorting the work essentials such your bank account and IRD (tax) number will help get your job and housing search off the ground. With up to 45 other Jen-setters to hang with, there’s also plenty of fun to be had with welcome drinks, a ferry trip and group dinner, and free time to explore Auckland.

All work 

The 4-day One 

Following the first four days with the same group as the 4-day One, on day five, you’ll have a free day before boarding the Kiwi Experience’s legendary green bus for a 3-day trip up to the jaw-dropping Bay of Islands. A subtropical paradise of 144 islands, wildlife-filled waters and Māori culture – this is an unmissable loop from Auckland. You’ll have two nights in a hostel in Paihia, with plenty of free activities including nature walks, waterfall hikes, beach hangs and visits to historic Māori sites. Plus, the option to go sailing, diving and swimming with dolphins. On day eight, you’ll return to Auckland for your final night at LyLo with your new besties.

New Zealand working holiday visas give you the flexibility to work anywhere, in any sector, and for the full 12 months of your visa (or longer for some nationalities). Typical backpacker jobs in New Zealand include working in hospitality, tourism, ski resorts, retail, labouring and fruit picking on farms and vineyards. This kind of short-term casual work is usually un-contracted, making it ideal to pick up as and when you need to earn. You can expect to earn the minimum wage or above.

Fruit picking often includes cheap staff accommodation – making it a great way to save money, make friends, and work outdoors in stunning locations. Although picking and packing work is year-round, the main season is summer/autumn (Nov-May). There are farms all over, but Hawkes Bay, Nelson, Otago and the Bay of Plenty tend to provide the most work. 

You can also work in industries related to your career, education or trade – such as construction, finance, marketing, nursing, beauty and everything in between. With a year or more to build up your experience and skills – here your earning potential will be higher.
