Top 5 tips for preparing for an internship interview

You've got your 'come hire me' outfit, now for the rehearsal...

Good prep can keep those pits fresh and the words coming out your mouth in just the order you intended.

Elvira Klavus, an intern with knowledge to burn, knows her way around an interview room...and crucially, the importance of knowing the way to an interview room. Here are her top tips for getting ready for an internship interview.

Preparing for an internship interview can feel nerve-racking, especially if it is your first one. However, with the right preparation and mindset, you can make a strong impression and increase your chances of success.

Tip 1: Do your homework

One of the most important things you can do before an interview is to research the company thoroughly. Look into the company’s history, its products or services, and its recent projects. Check if they have any news articles or press releases and read about their values and mission statement.

Being knowledgeable shows that you have taken the time to understand the company and that you are genuinely interested. It can also help you feel more confident during the interview, as you will be familiar with the company’s work and culture. You might even find topics to bring up during the conversation, which can make your interview feel more like a two-way discussion rather than a one-sided question-and-answer session.

Tip 2: Plan ahead and don't be late

Make sure you know exactly when and where your interview will take place. If it is in person, plan your route ahead of time and leave early to account for unexpected delays. If it is online, check the time zone and test your equipment in advance. Being late or missing instructions can create a negative first impression, even if you are otherwise qualified. Punctuality is a simple but powerful way to show professionalism and respect for the interviewer’s time. It can also bring the fluster factor down to acceptable levels, and reduce the sweatiness of your pits.

Tip 3: Be curious and ask questions

Always be prepared to ask questions about the company or the role. This shows that you are curious, engaged, and serious about the internship. Think about questions related to the company culture, day-to-day responsibilities, or future growth opportunities. If you have previous experience in the same field, you can ask more specific questions based on that knowledge. For example, you might inquire about a tool or software you have used before, or ask how projects are typically managed in the team. Asking thoughtful questions can help you stand out and make the conversation more interactive.

Tip 4: Practice talking about yourself

Most interviews begin with “so, tell me about yourself” and this is your chance to make a great first impression. Prepare a brief introduction that summarises your background, key skills, and experiences relevant to the internship. Writing bullet points of what you want to mention can help you remember everything without sounding rehearsed. Try to include one or two examples of your accomplishments or projects, as concrete examples often leave a stronger impression than general statements. It might feel icky but practicing out loud will help you feel more comfortable and confident in the interview. Big up yo'self.

Tip 5: Check the location

Sounds obvious but always confirm whether your interview will be in person or online. If it is in person, plan the route and aim to arrive early so you have a few minutes to relax before the interview starts. If it is online, make sure your camera, microphone, and internet connection are working properly. Choose a quiet, well-lit location and remove any potential distractions. Being prepared in terms of location and setup shows attention to detail and helps ensure that technical issues will not distract from your performance. Technical mishaps were cute is 2020 but they just make things awkward now.
