9 London filming locations you have to visit

From Harry's platform to Hugh's famous blue door – explore London via your fave films.

From the world's biggest blockbusters to indie classics – the UK's beloved capital is home to a billboard of award-winning film locations.

1. Notting Hill

We really couldn’t write about London filming locations without mentioning this classic rom-com featuring Britain's favourite floppy haired toff, Hugh Grant. The famous blue door, which leads to the home of William Thacker (aka Hugh Grant) and his eccentric roommate Rhys Ifans, can be found at 280 Westbourne Park Road. It is actually someone’s house, so please be respectful when snapping that selfie.

Kenwood House – a beautiful period manor house located at the top of London's much-loved Hampstead Heath – is where Anna Scott (aka Julia Roberts) was filming her movie. And The Ritz also featured when Hugh Grant’s character was trying to moonlight as a reporter for ahem Horse and Hound magazine.

2. Bridget Jones's Diary

From one legendary British rom-com to another. Us single Londoners can't fail to treasure this loveable and relatable character. The first film in particular sells the single London life to a T – with filming locations that span everywhere from Chelsea Bridge to Giuseppe’s Italian in London Bridge. Arguably the most famous location used in the film is that of her flat in Borough Market, which is set right above The Globe pub on Bedale Street. Though quite how a Publicity Assistant could afford a flat in London's boujiest markets, we'll never know. Movie magic, I guess…

3. Creep

From Bridget's ex-boyf creeps to actual creepy horrors, this 2004 schlock horror put every late-night Londoner's worst fears into action – being locked in the underground overnight trying to get home. With a deformed, monstrous-looking serial killer who’s trying to kill and eat you, might we add. Yikes.

It’s not just the actual tube platforms that featured, the tunnels feature heavily too – with poor leading actress Franka Potente apparently spending countless nights running through disused tunnels in both Charing Cross and Aldwych.

Tube fact: Of the 272 tube stations in London, 40 stations and 750 tunnels are either disused or abandoned. We'll leave you with that fact next time you're getting the tube home...

4. 28 Days Later

From one horror film to another – from deformed monsters to, well, deformed monsters. Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later was arguably Cillian Murphy’s breakout role, and it chronicles the effects of a virus which has swept through the population, turning people into flesh-eating zombies. A feel-good film then…

In one famous shot – which was shot at 5am according to movie legend – Cillian Murphy’s character, having awoken from his conveniently-timed coma, wanders across Westminster Bridge, past the Houses of Parliament, through Whitehall, up the Mall, into the City of London, back to Tottenham Court Road, to the statue of Eros, and on to Canary Wharf station. More movie magic making light work of London's sprawling geography.

5. Paddington

Everyone’s favourite bear is named after the London station, and there's even a duffel-coat wearing statue inside. But Paddington isn’t the only train station to appear in 2014’s Paddington. Marylebone makes another appearance on this list, standing in for the station frontage (as Paddington’s before the revamp wasn’t actually that nice). Away from rail termini, you’ll find the Brown family's home on the very pretty Chalcot Crescent in Primrose Hill (oh darling), whilst their local station ‘Westbourne Oak’ is actually a mish-mash of Maida Vale and Little Venice, St. John’s Wood, and the disused Jubilee line site in Charing Cross (which has also seen screen time in Skyfall, to name just one other example).

Finally, Gruber’s antique store is better known as Alice’s Antiques on Portobello Road. Let’s not forget the sequel either, which featured quite possibly one of the best performances by Hugh Grant away from his usual typecast bumbling Brit role. Paddington 2 featured St. Paul’s Cathedral prominently in one memorable scene with Hugh Grant waltzing around in a nun’s habit.

6. The Bourne Ultimatum

Probably one of the best action series of all time – fight us if you disagree – The Bourne Series has been filmed everywhere from Berlin to Goa and Madrid to Tangier. The third instalment, The Bourne Ultimatum, was also filmed in our beloved capital, with one incredible, heart-pumping sequence where (spoiler alert), Paddy Considine’s character is shot in the head in Waterloo Station.

Other spots featured in the film include Hatton Garden (the diamond district home to some of the UK's most infamous heists), Charing Cross, Lower Marsh and even the five-star hotel Rosewood London.

7. About a Boy

About A Boy made both critical and commercial waves on its release back in 2002 with both critics and punters alike. Starring leading rom-com man Hugh Grant, Toni Collette, Rachel Weisz and a young, bowl cut-wearing Nicholas Hoult, it follows a rich, child-free and somewhat selfish Londoner (Grant) in his thirties who invents an imaginary son (Hoult) on his quest to find and romance a whole gamut of single women.

Obviously being based in London, there are plenty of filming locations you might recognise in this one all over town, but the ZSL London Zoo, Regent’s Park, the BFI IMAX in Waterloo and Hakkasan Hanway Place in Tottenham Court Road are probably the most famous.

8. Harry Potter

If you’re potty about Potter, London is full of magical places for you to visit. Of course, there’s Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station, but pretty much everyone on Earth knows that. (Plus, the queues are decidedly un-magical). Aside from posing in front of a brick wall with a fake scarf, there are tons of other locations you can visit which are featured heavily in the films.

On the one hand, you’ve got the beautiful Leadenhall Market, which is the location they used for Diagon Alley; the entrance to The Leaky Cauldron, which is now an opticians in Bull’s Head Passage; Australia House, where they filmed the interior of Gringotts, and, of course, ZSL London Zoo’s reptile house, if you fancy trying to practice your parseltongue Slytherin.

9. Withnail and I

Withnail and I is considered one of Britain’s most iconic films – and for good reason. Sadly, most of the locations from this cult classic have been demolished over the years (thanks London property developers), including the Mother Black Cap pub which stood on Tavistock Crescent in bougie Notting Hill. However, its inspiration Camden’s famous Black Cap and the Mother Red Cap too – is now The World’s End, which works nicely both for “Two large gins. Two pints of cider. Ice in the cider” and a cheeky trip to The Dublin Castle thank you very much. You can also find Uncle Monty’s house at 35 Glebe Place in Chelsea and various other filming locations nearby to boot too.

So, there you have it film buffs! Nine places to visit in London on your UK working holiday in London or London internship.
